Why Emetophobia Feels So Strong & How to Start Overcoming It
Learn why emetophobia (fear of vomiting) can feel overwhelming, why avoidance makes it worse, and how CBT can help you regain control and confidence.
The false alarm system
Emetophobia isn’t about weakness or irrationality — it’s about your brain’s alarm system getting stuck in “protect mode.” When you’ve had an intense or frightening experience related to vomiting, your body learns that nausea = danger. Even a small stomach flutter can now trigger the same fight-or-flight response as a real threat.
The trap of avoidance
Because anxiety feels unbearable, you might start avoiding anything that could make you sick. You might eat the same foods repeatedly, avoid travel or social events, or spend hours online checking for reassurance. Unfortunately, this teaches your brain that those things really are dangerous — so the anxiety never gets a chance to subside.
You can re-train your brain
The good news is that with CBT for emetophobia, we can gently teach your brain a new pattern. Through gradual exposure, mindfulness, and values-based action, you learn that anxiety peaks and falls naturally, and that you can handle the sensations you fear most.
Moving toward freedom
You don’t need to “get rid of” anxiety before living fully. You can learn to move with it, rather than against it — step by step.👉 If this sounds familiar, and you’d like structured, evidence-based help for fear of vomiting, reach out to Jacky on 07896 953003 or jackyadams04@yahoo.co.uk
